Receiving an MLQ or MLQTeam Assessment Report provides the basis for on-going coaching, training and development plans for individual leaders or a group. Accredited MLQ Management Coaches are trained to produce dedicated and effective group and individual Leadership Development Plans (LDPs) efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.
Leaders may, in part, be born. But they are certainly also made through combined internal and external coaching based on the solid Full Range Leadership Development Model (Bass and Avolio) to achieve performance beyond expectations.
Too often staff and management development stops at assessment and neglects the development of leaders in an organisation. Simply sending them to external "off the shelf" workshops has been shown to be of limited value (e.g. The Karpin Report). However, dedicated on-the-job training through:
professional coaching partnerships
the establishment of affective coaching "boosters" within each organisation
the Full Range Leadership Model, and
individually-tailored leadership development plans.
results in development related to outcomes.
Development of an LDP
For individual leaders, a Leadership Development Plan (LDP) is established in two additional sessions following each leaders' initial session to receive feedback from the MLQ Profile Report. The plan is based on the objectives for leadership development arising from the MLQ assessment and is unique to each leader. It is developed with each leader by the coach using additional resources provided to the accredited MLQ Management Coach.
Draft LDP (DLDP)
- A Draft LDP is presented to the client under key headings which reflect salient relevant factors of the Full Range Leadership Model. The DLDP is the result of items being selected to develop the behaviour change goals indicated for development by the MLQ. The accredited MLQ Facilitator and Management Coach is trained to assist the identification of goals which have maximum leverage for optimising impact for improved outcomes with followers and associates of the leader / manager.
Final LDP
- The Draft LDP is then reviewed and organised in ways that suit the learning style and preferences of the leader / manager. The resulting final LDP is usually about four pages in length and has variations on indicated themes for development spanning usually a three to four week period. It is arranged into single page cycles for simplicity, interest, and ease of access by the leader.
Partial disclosures
- Partial disclosures of the final LDP can then be generated for appropriate "need to know associates and colleagues" who are selected to support the implementation of individual leader / manager development objectives.
